Defend Roseworthy Valley from Industrial Green Waste Development

First, another big thank for your generosity and for all the incredible support you continue to give to this vital campaign.

When I last updated the CrowdJustice page on 15 July, we had raised around £7,890 from approximately 41 donations. Today, that stands at an extraordinary £11,310 from 81 pledges.

I am enormously grateful to every one of you who has donated, shared the campaign, displayed a poster, delivered leaflets, talked to friends and neighbours, or simply sent me one of the many messages of encouragement I continue to receive. All of it matters, and together we are driving this challenge forwards, towards the High Court in December. And while that has been happening, I have been working on something else which I want to share with you today.

This dedicated website brings the story of this development together in one place: what is proposed, where it would go, its sheer scale, the environmental and other concerns, the unanswered questions, the High Court challenge. And, most importantly, why what happens in a field on this hillside matters far beyond the boundary of the site itself – and to the very future of this place.

Planning permission does not make this development inevitable. What happens next is not yet decided.

But at the heart of the website is a very simple message:

NONE OF US IS A BYSTANDER.

I need your help once more to take it further.

Please make the website work as hard as possible for us. Please share it. Send it to friends and family. Put it on social media. Talk about it. Encourage people to read it for themselves and understand what is being proposed and why this High Court challenge matters. For all of us.

Your individual decision to keep engaging with this campaign can materially change how far it reaches and, ultimately, whether we raise the money needed to get to the High Court in December.

Each of you has connections I could never hope to reach alone – with friends, communities, charities, businesses and groups of like-minded people. Every conversation has the potential to take this campaign somewhere new. The wider that circle becomes, the stronger our collective voice and this campaign become.

Together, we have already succeeded in bringing this challenge all the way to a two-day High Court hearing. Now we have to raise the funding to get us into that courtroom in December.

We began this CrowdJustice campaign just over 90 days ago with an initial £4,000 target. You got us there in less than two days! We moved to £7,500, then stretched again to £12,000, and today we are less than £700 from that current target.

So today I am increasing our next fundraising target to £20,000.

We expect to need around £50,000 from this point to take the challenge through the substantive High Court hearing in December. That figure relates to the complex legal work still ahead, including the upcoming preparation of the detailed skeleton arguments. The £20,000 stretch goal is therefore not the finishing line but our next target – an achievable stage towards raising what we now need to get into that courtroom in December.

One person can start a campaign, but it takes a committed community to get the fight over the line.

And that brings me to something I have been saving to share with you.

Recently, following the successful conclusion of another long-running Cornish campaign to protect a place its community cared deeply about, another campaigner passed these words on to me. I am borrowing them now because I can think of nothing more appropriate to pass on to all of you:

Every one of you who has donated, shared this campaign, displayed a poster, delivered a leaflet, talked to someone about what is happening here or simply encouraged me along the way is part of that “small group of thoughtful, committed citizens.”

Six weeks ago, around 41 donations stood behind this challenge. Today there are 81 pledges. Our numbers are growing. The campaign is growing. And together, we have already taken this much further than one person ever could.

There is still a long way to go but all our individual contributions are combining into collective strength.

This is still David and Goliath. But David no longer stands alone.
